description: When Phineas was a baby Pastor Tom picked up this chair at a rummage sale to replace the dilapidated pea green chair we had inherited from somewhere. The kids call it the Cuddle Chair and it's everyone's favorite spot to perch. I always have to kick someone out of it because, seriously, it's MY chair. Today I walked into the livingroom and found this crew making themselves at home in the Cuddle Chair.
You guys. Get out! That's my chair!
Honestly.
During the summer months I read aloud to the kids during lunch while they are all sitting around the table. It works out well because they are too busy filling their mouths with peanut butter banana sandwiches to goof off much during the story. It's kind of like having a captive audience. I like to choose a dramatic part of the story and leave off there. Lydia and Peter always send a devastated NOOOOOOOOOO!! soaring up towards the ceiling as they tilt their heads back and throw their hands into the air. I love it. Every time. Besides, I think it keeps them coming back for more. If they are good in the evening and get their chores done, pajamas on, and teeth brushed then I grace them with more of the story. I love that part of the evening when the livingroom is cleaned up and so are the children. We flop around like sacks of laziness, half on and half off the couches, listening to the story. It's always at that time when I think to myself that having a large family is one of the beautiful things in this world.
Today at lunch I left the children with another cliff hanger.
Arrietty froze. So this is it, she thought, the worst and most terrible thing of all: I have been 'seen'! Whatever happened to Eggletina will now, almost certainly, happen to me!
After the table had been cleared the kids flittered off like mindless moths to the livingroom where the TV had been left on after this morning's PBS Kids ritual. I turned it off and ignored their protests. Twenty minutes later I stood at the top of the basement stairs and yelled down, Kids! It's time for naps!
I make them take naps in the summer, too. It's good for me them.
There was silence and then I heard the sound of small children scrambling about. Lydia appeared in the basement doorway and called up Aawww! We're having so much fun! We're pretending we're the Borrowers and the basement is under the kitchen floor and under the stairs is our house and you're one of the big people upstairs and -
- and she earned them all twenty more minutes of play time because that sounded awesome.
So that's my major summertime parenting hack: read to your kids, turn off the TV, and then sit back and watch the magic happen.
Bethany Ann 💛
